Separate Manufacturer Tracks

Ford ASSET, GM ASEP, Honda PACT, Mopar CAP, and Toyota T-TEN alternate classroom and lab instruction with paid dealership internships.

How the Main Manufacturer Programs Work

Dealer-sponsored tracks alternate campus and shop time. At Cosumnes River College, Ford ASSET students are sponsored by and employed at a Ford or Lincoln dealership and earn an A.S. plus Ford STST certificates in two years and one summer. At Glendale Community College, GM ASEP gives eight intensive weeks of class each semester, then dealership work with a technician mentor.

Others are brand specializations. Rio Hondo College's Honda PACT is a two-year A.S. with a new cohort each summer. Collin College's Toyota T-TEN degree includes at least 640 dealership internship hours and nine Toyota certifications. GateWay Community College's Nissan academy alternates eight-week classroom and paid dealership blocks.

What Sponsorship Means for Admission

Sponsored tracks add steps beyond college enrollment. Glendale's GM ASEP requires dealership sponsorship, Cosumnes River screens and interviews applicants for dealership matching, and Collin requires departmental permission for Honda PACT and Toyota T-TEN. Sheridan Technical College's Nissan academy requires applicants to be 18 with fewer than four points on their license.

Dealerships can also run a background check or drug test. Wayne Community College's work-based learning option asks for a valid license and an employable driving record. A general program at the same school, such as San Jacinto's FAST degree, needs no admission step beyond college enrollment.

What Brand Training Costs

Published estimates show a range. GateWay lists $6,626 for its Nissan pathway at in-county rates, excluding books. Odessa estimates $9,255 for Ford ASSET with tuition, fees, and supplies. Ivy Tech lists $12,308 for its GM ASEP AAS against $10,703 for its standard AAS, a $1,605 difference.

Because dealerships pay students during work blocks at several schools, the net cost can differ from the sticker price. Compare these routes with the auto mechanic apprenticeship guide and the ASE certification guide to see how factory training and ASE credentials fit together.

What Is GM ASEP?
GM ASEP is General Motors' college and dealership training program. At Glendale Community College it combines four semesters of classroom and lab instruction with paid dealership internships and requires dealership sponsorship.
