Automotive technician and mechanic describe the same trade, and most people use the two words interchangeably. Some shops and schools draw a line: mechanic for hands-on parts replacement, technician for electronic diagnosis. The line is a matter of emphasis, not a separate license or a separate government occupation.
This guide explains how the words are used, what the federal wage data does with them, and what the difference means when you pick training. If you are still deciding whether to start, read how to become an auto mechanic first.
The Short Answer
A mechanic traditionally repairs and replaces mechanical parts such as brakes, suspension, and driveline components. A technician is the newer word and leans toward electronic diagnosis, scan tools, and the computer systems in modern vehicles. Universal Technical Institute notes that the terms are often used interchangeably in the industry, and that professionals still debate whether the difference means much.
How The Government Counts Them
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not split the trade. Its occupation is called Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics, SOC code 49-3023, and it reports one set of wages for everyone in it. The May 2025 data shows 704,640 workers, a median wage of $50,620, a 10th percentile of $34,660, and a 90th percentile of $81,790.
That means no federal pay figure says technicians earn more than mechanics, or the reverse. The auto mechanic salary guide explains what moves pay inside that range.
Where Shops And Schools Draw The Line
Universal Technical Institute and AAI both describe the split the same way. Mechanics are tied to hands-on mechanical work and basic maintenance with traditional hand tools. Technicians are tied to modern vehicle technology, diagnostic tools, and computers. AAI adds that technicians may plan repairs that mechanics then carry out.
| Measure | Mechanic, As Often Described | Technician, As Often Described |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Replacing and repairing mechanical parts | Diagnosing electronic and computer systems |
| Common tools | Traditional hand tools | Scan tools, diagnostic tablets, and computers |
| Typical tasks | Brake pads, oil changes, driveline and suspension parts | Drivability problems and electrical diagnosis |
| Federal wage category | Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics | Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics |
What It Means For Your Training
You do not choose a different school for each word. AAI says a vocational program can teach the skills required for both, followed by internships, apprenticeships, and certifications. Universal Technical Institute adds that many employers prefer to hire technicians who have completed a postsecondary program, because modern vehicles require current training.
Look for programs that cover electrical systems, engine performance, and diagnostic equipment alongside brakes and suspension. That mix prepares you for either title. The national auto mechanic school rankings list programs by what they teach.
Does The Title Change Your Pay
Not by itself. Pay follows the work you can do, the shop, the local market, and how the employer pays for labor, as the BLS percentile spread shows. A person who diagnoses complicated electrical faults may be assigned different jobs from someone starting with maintenance, but that is a skills difference rather than a title rule.
For the credentials that help you show those skills, read the ASE certification guide. The A6 electrical and A8 engine performance tests line up with the diagnostic side of the trade.
Which Word To Use
Use whichever your employer or school uses. Job postings say technician, service tech, or mechanic, so search with all three. On a resume, automotive technician reads as current and covers both hands-on and diagnostic work. Schools often name programs automotive technology, and you can browse programs by state to see what each one calls its training.
